Defective!

Like almost all of the reviewers before me I am experiencing the same problem. When I open the door the light flickers and will not work. Now when I open the door if the light is not on it does not work at all, and if I open the door before while it is still running it does not shut off! This must be a defect in this model but in just trying to call Whirlpool there is not even an option to choose to talk to someone about it! Like the other reviewers this problem did not start happening until after it was two years old so no warranty. Not good!!

Started having problems at around the 1 1/2 year mark. It would make a shotgun blast sound when turning on. I googled it and found many others with the same problem - something about steam getting into electrical components. Very bad design. I continued to use since shotgun blast would happen periodically but last night it made a different sound and had an electrical smell so it's dead now. My previous Whirlpool microwave lasted 16+ years so that's why I replaced with same manufacturer.

We bought all Whirlpool appliances when we moved into our house 3 years ago. After a few months of using the microwave we had problems with the interior light. We went through a hassle to have fixed. After 2 years the light under the microwave stopped working. My husband replaced and the bulb did not work and heated up. We have been without a light under the microwave for about a year. I started reading the reviews and saw about the electrical. Very disappointed. Will not purchase a whirlpool product again.

Bought this Microwave MicrowaveWMH31017FB for my mother approximately 16 months ago. 3 weeks ago the fan decided it would not shut off. I would expect a microwaves to last longer than 16 months By the time I pay for a service call and parts it's probably not worth fixing. Very disappointed in this product. I won't be buying any whirlpool products after this experience. Poor Quality.

Don't Purchase:Design Flaw -Poor Customer Service
JimG2019

I purchased this microwave for a kitchen remodel. The manufacture date on label shows November 2016. Builder purchased in Sept 2017, however we did not begin using until Feb 2018. Noticed a lot of condensation and mold growing in the cabinet directly above the unit. This is from using the microwave - Not the stove top below. The microwave vents directly upward - I think it may be a design flaw. Called customer service - spoke to Nick. He told me (after being on the phone with him a very long time) that there was nothing he could do because the unit was over the 1 year warranty period. This is not something that we would have noticed right away as the cupboard gets very little use given its location. Very disappointed so far but I am not giving up yet for resolution. Our last Whirlpool microwave was still going strong after 25 years - that is why we chose this one to replace it.

I bought this microwave as a result of a home purchase in September 2017. The following year I had to call a service tech to replace a part that was causing the food to not heat consistently. This visit was under warranty. However, the following year, I had the same issue happen again in regards to the appliance not heating consistently. I called Bob Wallace Appliance and they stated that I needed to call Whirlpool directly as they would charge me $99 to come out and then charge me for parts and labor. So, I called Whirlpool and the first lady only offered to send me information about other outlet stores. I then asked to speak to a Manager who verified that the parts were covered as they were installed less than a year ago, but would still be charged for a service visit and labor. This is not standing behind the product, but rather encouraging me to purchase an extended warranty. I should not be pressured to purchase an extended warranty as an item that is over $300 of my hard earned money should last more than a year and a half without having to replace parts again. The purpose of an extended warranty is to protect from major appliance issues, not a simple transformer and multiple service calls for the same item not working properly. As a result of Whirlpool not standing by their product, I will not be purchasing another appliance of any kind with the Whirlpool brand name. When I called earlier today, I gave Whirlpool the chance to do the right thing and stand behind their product, but they failed and as a result, have lost what could be a loyal lifelong customer.

Like all the other reviews, this microwave stopped working after 1 year 8 months, manufactured June 2017. The light began flashing. Then it would come up with a message "door", then the light would shut off and the microwave no longer worked. This is a known problem and all they are willing to do is pay for the "expensive" parts. You have to foot the bill for the tech and labor. My father who was in the appliance service business for years would turn over in his grave.

Light stays on and plate spins all the time
Unhappy151
5/30/2019
Bought this appliance, like everyone else, with a new home. 11 months after purchase, while heating a bowl of soup, the microwave flashed-like electricity, and it hasn't worked since. The microwave still functioned but the light stayed on and the plate spun non stop. It's gotten worse- the door open indicator wouldn't allow it to function and today the microwave just sparked, randomly, and shut off.
I called whirlpool after the first incident, 6 months ago, and was assured that someone would contact me. When they didn't contact within 2 weeks I called back and was told that I never called. I do receive whirlpool warranty info in the mail asking for $750 towards the purchase of an extended warranty, as mine has expired...yeah right.
Bottom line- this thing is obviously defective. Same issue as everyone else...now it's dead.
I'd be happy with someone coming out to fix it, as others have had, but really I'd think whirlpool would stand by their product and replace these units. My mission now is to tell EVERYONE buying a new house, in this community, and everyone on the Internet not to buy from whirlpool as the product is inferior and their customer service is non existent when it breaks- even within the warranty period.

Microwave came with the brand new home along with other two whirlpool appliances. The label says it was manufactured on June 2017. We moved into our new house in Jan 2018. After 17 months of normal use, it suddenly stopped heating up food (everything else like the vent hood fan and the lights seems to work fine, except making a louder noise than before.) Extremely disappointed with Whirlpool. I talked with whirlpool customer service, but they told me that they wouldn't do anything because it's out of one year warranty.

Microwave came with the brand new home along with other two whirlpool appliances. The label says it was manufactured on June 2017, and we didn't start using it until we moved in September 2017. After 20 months of normal use, it suddenly stopped heating up food (everything else like the vent hood fan and the lights seems to work fine, except making a louder noise than before.) I searched online and it says that the possible cause of not heating up food is due to magnetron failure. I called the whirlpool customer service, but they told me that they wouldn't do anything because it's out of one year warranty. Extremely disappointed with Whirlpool for selling a poor/defective product that doesn't last no longer than two years and not offering the repair service beyond one year. We will never buy another whirlpool product again.

I really like the looks of this microwave and thought it would be a good and reliable one but I have lost the admiration of Whirlpool. I, just like everyone else, have had problems with the light flickering and the oven not stopping when I have opened the door. I even accidentally put my hand in it without thinking. To me, this is a fire hazard and a health safety hazard. I can't find my receipt for when I purchased it but it is probably within the last year. Without my receipt, I was told by the merchant I bought it from that they couldn't do anything about it. I am really discouraged!

Microwave came with house build. Just the others, the light flickers. I reached out to tech support and they couldn't even tell me how to open it. I just got a bulb after my husband figured out that you access it from the top.
Bulb had something like rubber on it. If replacing the bulb doesn't work, I will conclude that it's probably the latch that's causing it. Since the appliance is like ft Knox it's likely unfixable.

I purchased this microwave along with 3 other matching appliances. The microwave light on inside started flickering when opening door. It then got to where the lights flickered and the turn table turned without the door being closed, and at times it would not turn off when the door was opened after heating something up. I read hundreds of reviews that claimed the same problem. Definitely a manufacturers defect. Whirlpool sent someone out to repair the latch in the door. Within less than 4 months the unit is doing it again. Whirlpool is not willing to replace the unit but willing to send someone out again to replace the defective part. Whirlpool Safety department said that they do not have any kind of replacement just a repair warranty. While the repair was much appreciated, the repair is a band aid to the problem. I asked if the problem continues every few months are they going to keep sending someone to repair it. The answer was NO. I feel this unit is potentially a fire hazard in my home. I felt very secure in my purchase with a company of what I felt to have high standards to which they have fallen below the mark. Long story short, I will be purchasing a replacement microwave but unfortunately will not be purchasing another Whirlpool. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

This came with a new house. same issue as others. Light starts to flicker, open door and microwave still runs, etc. Finally it blew its fuse and guess where that is located. You have to remove the microwave from its mounting, take many many screws out to get at the fuse and sure enough it was blown. Don't plan on replacing the door switches and the fuse so I can do it all over again so it will go to the recycling center and I will purchase a different one. These are construction grade microwaves and are junk.

Electrical issues, Whirlpool - no response

Like many others on here my unit stopped working after a year due to issues with the door sensor - lights flickering in the unit until one day it finally wouldn't work at all. Whirlpool responded that they cared about our issue, but never would reply to the emails they asked us to send. I've sent multiple emails with all the requested information and no response from Whirlpool. That was 2 months ago. Will be looking for a different manufacturer next time.

We bought our first microwave in 1985 and it was more advanced than this one. I can imagine the builder wanted to spend the minimum, but really! For a few $ more, they could have done much better! I do not have a problem with Whirlpool, as my previous 2 microwaves were Whirlpool, and they served as well for 11 years. I got 10 years of good service out of the 1 st one.

Similar issues as others. Whirlpool really needs to make good on this product. Unit was installed in a new home build in May 2017. After just over a year, the light inside would flicker and then the microwave stopped registering when the door was closed, rendering it useless. Had the unit serviced and the same problem came back after a few weeks. Will take more money to fix than to just purchase a new one (from a different brand, obviously.)

I bought a new house an upgraded my appliances to stainless steel. This microwave was part of the upgrade.
It does everything and it does it well. There are specific settings to reheat different foods. Have a beverage to heat? This microwave will sense the temperature and heat it perfectly every single time. It's easy to use, very specific in its ability, and works without any issues.
The fan could be better, it's a built in over the stove, and it base plate picks up a lot of cooking oil so it needs to be removed and cleaned at least every 6 months if not more, but fans aren't very good in these anyway. I would highly recommend this product

Came new with house in spring 2017. Worked until December 2018. Had been having the flickering light/door ajar problem, which I could "fix" by opening and closing the door a couple of times hard. Then one day the door switch wouldn't work at all; and the microwave blew the circuit breaker and died completely. Had to go get a cheap micro from Walmart to get by. Guess this one will need to be replaced way too soon - certainly not with another one of these.

Flickering Light and "Door" Issue (2.5 yrs old)
Frustrated101
1/25/2019
I'm thoroughly disappointed with this product and with the follow up support from Whirlpool on this product. For quite some time, we've been having issues with the light flickering inside the unit. It was annoying but we assumed that the bulb was just going out. The problem was intermittent. Now (after about 2.5 years), we've started to get an intermittent issue that states "door" on the display, as though the unit doesn't register that the door is closed after we attempt to heat something. Opening and closing the door does not resolve this issue. Sometimes, the unit "fixes" itself after some time, but now the issue is occurring more frequently. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

Trying to troubleshoot an issue with my microwave and came across multiple, poor reviews. The light flickering and the "door" message appearing seems to be a theme amongst Whirlpool microwaves.I have the same problem and sometimes, not only does the unit not operate because it doesn't register that the door is closed...But it also doesn't register that the door is open. I have opened the door and had the unit continue to run! Faulty and dangerous, I Was going to replace it with the same model until I read all of these reviews

We purchased this microwave almost 15-months ago. It is roughly 2 1/2 months after the warranty expired and it no longer works. Four weeks ago the interior light began flickering when the door was opened/closed. The issue did not affect the unit operation, so we decided to address the flickering light following the holidays. The flickering occurred intermittently, so, with no warranty to protect our purchased, we postponed calling a repair technician. Twenty days into 2019 and now the unit door will not shut, the light remains lit, and the unit no longer functions. So much for quality workmanship.

It was professionally installed. Have owned it for approximately 4 months and since the first week the fan goes on for no reason. The only way to get it to shut off is by tripping the circuit on the home fuse box. Even that doesn't work all the time.
Also, as someone else mentioned, the light is also not very effective.

We moved into our new build house in April 2017. A few months later the microwave just stopped heating. It was still under warranty. The Whirpool technician told us he would have told us to buy a new one if it wasn't under warranty because he had to rebuild it. Flash forward another 10 months and we are out of warranty and start getting the flickering door light and no response that a lot of other reviewers have had. Now we have no vent or microwave because it won't even power up. A total waste. Super disappointed in this product! We have to shell out another $300 for a microwave on a new house. A few of our neighbors are having the same issues. Also, the entire front of the microwave is blazing hot when we use our gas stove top. (when the microwave worked)

We bought a new house in April 2017 and it included brand new appliances, to include this very same microwave model. Like a lot of the positive reviewers, I really liked this microwave when I first got it. However, after about 18 months, the light started flickering, accompanied by a clicking sound, when the door was opened. The microwave still worked for a few months, but eventually started not recognizing that the door was shut and so wouldn't run. I'd have to open and close the door 3 or 4 times or wait 5 minutes and it would finally work. Now (less than 2 years after purchase), it has completely quit working. Whirlpool really needs to improve the door latch design!
